Yeah, X-Men Destiny doesn’t quite live up to what it could’ve been, especially with the lack of truly diverse gameplay and co-op/multiplayer options.

Casual gamers should probably skip – this is one for true X-Men aficionados.

Take the game at face value – as an opportunity to be an overpowered superhero for a few hours – and you could enjoy the ride.

Unfortunately it feels like Silicon Knights wrote the story on the back of a cocktail napkin and employed absolutely zero imagination in building the enemies we'd be facing.

Little of the excitement that could have followed in the booted footsteps of X-Men Legends or Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is buried within its too-short campaign and thin smattering of gameplay.

While the game was billed as an “action-RPG”, calling it that would be a gross overstatement.

It’s just that all of the good ideas are mixed in with dull ones, and the finished product is half-baked, making this an experience worth skipping for all but the most diehard of X-Men fans.

Despite regular appearances by some of Marvel's most famous mutants, this anemic and underwhelming hack-'n-smash plays like a missed opportunity.

X-gene distribution is randomised, and you're obliged to choose between base power development arcs, so compulsive X-Men collectionists are again well-served.

Some have called X-Men: Destiny the spiritual successor to X-Men: Legends, but that couldn't be farther than the truth.

As mediocre as it is half-finished, X-Men: Destiny’s rare glimpses of something better make it all the more disappointing.

In X-Men: Destiny, mindless combat and meaningless choices combine to create a new mutation of boredom.

X-Men Destiny tries to provide a unique look at a universe full of mutants, but it falls flat in many ways and only barely manages to stay afloat otherwise.

I really do like the customization options and the fact that it's a licensed superhero game where you're not playing as an iconic character. But at the end of the day Destiny is an absolute mess that isn't worth your time.

Lengthy animations bog down every attack in your arsenal, giving the whole thing an annoying, sluggish feel that's heightened by occasionally laughable slowdown.

Superhero video games are generally pretty lackluster experiences, and, for the most part, the primary reason any of us are continually enticed into playing them is to take on the role of one of our favorite comic-book heroes or villains and brave their individual novelized storylines.
