One of Den of Geek’s most beloved directors returns to the big screen
When the words 'John Carpenter's The Ward' flash across the screen, in the same white out of black type the director has used since Halloween, the message appears to be: the Carpenter we once knew is back.

Carpenter's always been at his best when directing his own scripts, but here he's saddled with a script that screams direct-to-video.

A disappointment from master of horror John Carpenter
While The Ward isn’t Carpenter’s worst, it’s far from his best.

Ok Thriller is up again
Well it was about time to see a thriller that's exactly that. Leaving aside John Carpender's name this is a good feat. It dances around psycological and horror; it never shows, it rather suggests; it's prologue is an attack in a mental institution during lights out. Then the title sequense strikes which its simple, effective and, on some level, underlines the whole movie. Then the main story takes off with the main character burning down a farm. Confused and agitated and downright hostile, she's taken by a couple of cops who where patroling the area, to the very same mental institution. And from there things turn out nasty.
No big surprises on this film; the scares, the fright, the saspens, the build up, the twist, all have classic written all over; and its not totaly unexpected when the man behind the directors chair is one of the few that shaped the way thrillers ought to be presented. There are weaknesses; no real script to start with, the undertone of all other supporting characters, the fact that all patients are women and pretty darn beutifull at that, the stuff, consistant from three nurses and a doctor, is in no way capable to watch that many patients, are some of these. But i payed no attention to them while the movie unfolted (which can only illustrate the mastery of it all), and when it ended; well, none of that really mattered.
All in all a good come back from my favorite director, to a style he knows how to handle and deliver.
