The result, chronologically assembled with a minimum of commentary, is surely the most thorough look at the art and passion of auto racing yet made

The thread of tragedy running through Senna isn’t just due to awareness of how its subject died, as one of two drivers killed in an accident-heavy race that led to reevaluation of F1 safety.

"Senna" is such a vivid and powerful film about a larger-than-life personality that I hesitate to criticize it

"Senna" is a documentary with the pace of a thriller, a story of motors and machines that is beyond compelling because of the intensely human story it tells.

Sports films may often center on great triumphs, of which Senna presents plenty; the best ones, however, are defined just as much by great losses.

Ambitiously constructed, deeply compelling, thrilling and in no way only for those who like watching cars drive in circles. A worthy paean to a true talent.

The aura of a life lived in extremis, undergirded by faith, clings to the film.

Footage from an onboard camera thrillingly places the viewer in Senna's lap, and soberingly includes the accident that claimed his life.

Senna is a stirring snapshot of a charismatic, immensely talented man driven to be the best, even if the risks of chasing such success were fatal.

Not surprisingly, a documentary constructed entirely from newsreel footage proves inadequate to the task of sounding the depths of someone as complicated or driven (pun intended) as Senna.

Moreover, it isn't every day that one witnesses, via a camera mounted with the driver, some of the final images in a man's life before he crashes into a wall at enormous speed.

director Asif Kapadia creates a full picture of a talented driver (rain on a track was a good omen for him) and his humble family, and the country that embraced him at a crucial time in its history.

Point-of-view footage taken from inside Senna’s car is used throughout the film, but when Mr. Kapadia uses it here it is particularly disturbing.
