The end result is higher productivity and increased value for your hard earned dollar. The new series will be offered in sizes from 250GB to 3TB. Pricing for the 3TB version starts at a competitive $179. An SSD is going to offer more performance at the expense of capacity, there's no way around that as seen in the testing. However Seagate's New Barracuda line up is making positive steps towards reducing that performance differential. You get capacity and performance in a single drive!

Overall, the new 3TB Barracuda moves in the right direction and certainly whets our appetite for upcoming higher capacity hard drives based on 1TB platters. It offers faster speeds than the prior version through most of our benchmarks and is many ways is the fastest 7200RPM 3TB 3.5" hard drive on the market. Couple that with the improved power profile and Seagate has a great option for those craving capacity and performance from a hard drive.

A 1TB / Platter Monster is Unleashed

There is no denying that it is currently one of the best hard drives currently on the market. Seagate has effectively combined efficiency with high end performance without charging an arm and a leg. As such, the Barracuda becomes one of only a few products to win a trifecta of awards from us.

The 3TB Seagate Barracuda Hard Drive ST3000DM001 resists that forthcoming change for at least a while longer, and its massive three-Terabyte capacity paired to the future-proof SATA 6Gb/s interface will certainly help punctuate this. The affordable cost to capacity ratio puts the Barracuda ahead of SSDs by a long-shot, while still offering respectable bandwidth performance speeds for enthusiast computer systems.

Seagate Barracuda 1TB platter drive is 10-15% faster than the older Barracuda XT in the sequential read and write, and consumes less power. While it is a tad slower in random write, it is nonetheless a very good choice for storage drives due to its low power consumption and good price ratio.

The new 3TB Barracuda is a bit faster in sequential performance than the old Barracuda XT, at lower power consumption. Seagate appears to have optimized the drive's behavior for lower power rather than peak performance. If you want the absolute best performance out of a 3.5" drive, stick with the XT or wait for the new hybrid version. I'm not sure I particularly agree with Seagate's decision to abandon the 5900RPM drive market, but thankfully there are other options available if you want a high capacity, lower power drive.
