Details

In 1923, Rudolf Steiner, a scientist, philosopher & social innovator, predicted that in 80 to 100 years honeybees would collapse. His prediction has come true with Colony Collapse Disorder, where bees are disappearing in mass numbers from their hives with no clear single explanation. In an alarming inquiry into the insights behind Steiner’s prediction QUEEN OF THE SUN: What Are the Bees Telling Us? examines the dire global bee crisis through the eyes of biodynamic beekeepers, scientists, farmers, and philosophers. On a pilgrimage around the world, the film unveils 10,000 years of beekeeping, highlighting how our historic and sacred relationship with bees has been lost due to highly mechanized industrial practices. Featuring Michael Pollan, Vandana Shiva, Gunther Hauk and beekeepers from around the world, this engaging, alarming and ultimately uplifting film weaves together a dramatic story that uncovers the problems and solutions in renewing a culture in balance with nature.

Queen of the Sun is as entertaining as it is educational, and should attract a strong following among fans of the insects and nature docs, as well as anyone interested in ecological issues.

The message here is vital, though, and Siegel retains the gift of making you dream of making a difference.

'Sun' Days: A Time Of Hanging On And Hoping

Queen of the Sun takes a different approach. It's not that the stakes aren't high: At issue is the disappearance of honeybee colonies across North America and Europe — colonies that are vital to agriculture.

Siegel's message remains the same: We need to trust the Earth to its own hands.

Bee movie is no B movie

Some of the film's more reverential moments are a bit much - I could have used less rhapsodizing about the sacredness of bees - but in all the film is convincing, and it winds up with a to-do list for those who want to help.

What Queen of the Sun lacks in narrative, Siegel mostly makes up for with his camera.

There’s half of two good films in Queen Of The Sun, but they’re not quite the same film.

Siegel ultimately makes up for this omission with his lovingly shot, near-psychedelic imagery

What is clear, though — thanks to the film’s tropically saturated cinematography and crystalline lighting — is that their honey has never looked so delicious. Or so precious.

In fact, too many for the film to tackle thoroughly, which makes one wish Queen of the Sun would devote even more of its images to just observing honey dripping into a bowl and bees' hysteric diligence at work.

Wonder why so many bees seem to have skeedaddled? This doc provides the answer

A cautionary tale about man’s perversion of his environment, Queen of the Sun optimistically counters with a panoply of ravishing shots featuring harmonious interaction between bees and impossibly colorful flowers, even as it plays up “the miracle of nature” angle a tad too heavily.

Queen of the Sun is too nice a package for the material it delivers, and the best it can do is inspire conversation.
