Details

The sprawling favelas that surround Rio de Janeiro are some of the most dangerous places in the world… and it’s Captain Nascimento’s job to take down the gangs that run them. Although his methods are violent, he’s very good at his job. When he’s promoted to a powerful government position, he thinks he’ll finally be able to finish the job – but instead finds out that he’s only made things easier for the dirty cops and corrupt politicians that are truly running the show.

Elite Squad and Elite Squad: The Enemy Within have both been about Nascimento trying to pass on his invincible masculinity to someone else, and failing.

A marked improvement on the first film, it's easy to see why this was such a smash in Brazil. Breathless, brutal and thrilling, it's a gut punch of an action movie.

The story is expansive and intriguing, the action does not disappoint and it’s not hard to see why this is the most financially successful film in Brazil’s history.

..the film is a solid, tense political-action-thriller that mostly succeeds in redeeming itself from the simplistic narrative and totalitarian undertones existent in its predecessor.

Gritty sequel in which Wagner Moura's police captain gets promoted, giving him another chance to fight violence with violence

That said, the whole thing’s driven by palpable anger to tell it like it is and a pivotal role for a sociology prof offers a degree of ideological light and shade.

Solid central performances and some genuinely fascinating cinematography keep it from being unwatchable, but if you’re not already a fan of the series this is no place to start.

Examined any more closely, it's just a standard conspiracy yarn – Magnum Force to the first film's Dirty Harry – bolted to a pessimistic view of law and order in modern-day Rio.
