Originating from the perpetually cool New York scene, the intriguing Darwin is a Baba Lover - following Meher Baba's teachings that cheerfulness has a spiritual value - and concedes with refreshing honesty that his clean lifestyle is at odds with a booze-soaked indie music movement.

Next up, Darwin Deez, a New York-based artist for whom the word "offbeat" seems to have been invented.

Darwin Deez is said to be a spiritual chap and a Baba lover and this album reflects that in a way. It's not over-produced, in fact, some tracks almost sound like bedroom demos but that's a compliment.

The hottest ’tache in indie defies natural selection with a charmingly low-key anomaly of a debut

For the sake of a good soundbite, we’ll call it Reverse Darwinism, akin to dredging the lake and finding a three-titted, five-eyed mutant piscine flapping around at the bottom of it.

Working the geek chic as hard as his GarageBand presets, this Myrtle Beach-born, U.K.-hyped quirkster is the rare bedroom rocker with sophisticated songwriting skills.

While we all cut back on the inessential stuff in life to save money, Darwin Deez has done the same with his debut album: As his star rises, and he’s open to more production-rich opportunities, let’s hope he remains just as thrifty.

As Deez inevitably ascends into the velveteen environs of professional production, let’s hope he doesn’t paper too thickly over these colourful cracks.

Darwin “Deez” Smith is one quirky mammajamma, that’s for sure.

the songs from Darwin Deez may not get pilfered by a platinum-selling stadium band, but they’re good enough to earn Smith some recognition for his own work.

There’s an absolutely great EP somewhere amongst the length of Darwin Deez’s debut, it’s just unfortunate that it’s been distilled into a sub-par full-length.

Every song cleaves to a format of clipped guitar chords and drawled vocals laid over electronic percussion.

Could the good folk who compile 6Music's playlists write me an essay on why their station is getting canned including a section titled "Because we put shite like Darwin Deez on heavy rotation"?
