A stellar superhero game that raises the bar for its peers, Rocksteady's Arkham City is indeed the game that Gotham City deserves, and a must-own for Bat-fans.

Batman: Arkham Asylum was the greatest superhero game of all time. The sequel, Batman: Arkham City, is five times bigger and about a billion times better. You do the math.

Is the Batman Arkham City hype justified? All gaming elements aside, it's simply one of the best Batman interpretations we've seen to date. That's including film, TV, even comics. Quite simply a masterpiece

Living up to a fantastic debut is difficult enough, but Batman: Arkham City conclusively outshines its predecessor in every respect, not only tweaking its already fantastic combat, weapon, and control schemes for the better, but, more impressively, transplanting its action to a sprawling environment that proves even better suited for its various gameplay modes.

Arkham City Review: The Best Licensed Video Game Ever Made

Gotham City’s skyline glows warmly, showing decades of progress and prosperity in each of its majestic towers. On this night, this impressive view is obstructed by the massive concrete walls of Arkham City, Gotham’s new home for its lunatics and murderers.

There's still a lot of work to be done in Arkham City.

I realized something last night after completing Batman's latest campaign against scum and villainy. The best games are the ones that make you feel something.

Dizzyingly extensive and lovingly detailed, Rocksteady has created an intricate, spirited and unequalled playground worthy of one of the most iconic characters in modern fiction.

Twenty-six hours of gameplay after I spun up the disc, only 67% complete by the game’s telling, I dropped my controller, shaking my head. You win, Rocksteady. You beat me. This game is perfect.

Believe the hype. Arkham City is one of the most important games made for this generation and it's also a masterclass in design, execution and treatment.

British developer Rocksteady scored something of a coup in 2009 with Batman: Arkham Asylum. Its brilliant realisation of the Dark Knight in the gaming medium came at critics and gamers from completely out of left field. Not only was it one of the year's best video games, it was easily the best Batman video game of all time.

Not just the game we needed, but the game we deserve.

Can you imagine having the daunting task of following up the greatest superhero game of all time, let alone what is considered one of the best games of this generation?

A Knight to remember

It's a belief in the character and, most importantly, a belief in itself that has seen the studio deliver one of the greatest Batman interpretations of all time. And you know what? Maybe even one of the best games ever.

The Dark Knight rises(pun intended) in a spectacular sequel that surpasses Arkham Asylum in every way and is a serious contender for Game of the Year.

Arkham City does what everyone hoped it would yet feared it couldn't; expand and improve on Arkham Asylum. Indeed, Arkham City is a bigger and better game in all regards, delivering an immaculately presented, rich, compelling play experience and gripping story while simultaneously respecting its source material's legacy and pushing the Batman myth further forward.

The greatest superhero game of all time?

Rocksteady have succeeded in creating a worthy sequel to Arkham Asylum, as Arkham City is fun, challenging, well written, filled with great characters, and offers an enormous amount of content to keep gamers immersed in Arkham City for months to come.

Nothing to say, except: "I'm Batman!"

Batman: Arkham City is many things. It’s a greatly-improved sequel to the multi-award-winning Arkham Asylum. It’s a playable season of The Animated Series. It’s wish fulfillment of the highest order. But most of all, it’s just a friggin’ awesome game.

Developer Rocksteady beats the sophomore slump like the Dark Knight beats purse-snatchers.

Sometimes reviewers can't see the forest for the trees. When I finished Batman: Arkham City, I immediately cataloged what I thought it did wrong. It tossed in too many villains and didn't flesh them out, it clearly tried to replicate the Scarecrow stuff from the first game and didn't do it as well, and Batman still moves a bit stiffly when simply walking around.

If you had nearly any kind of fun with Rocksteady's previous effort or you're just looking to jump into a good comic book game, then Arkham City should be at or near the top of your list.

If you’re not, you should be. As in Arkham Asylum, Arkham City’s Batman is dark, ferocious and uncompromising. While still very much the comic book hero, this is a grown-up’s Batman – a Batman for those that play their games at night.
