Everywoman you can believe in, showcased in the kind of deft comedy of feminine passion — where deep despair meets Wilson Phillips — that a great many people have been waiting for. Now that Wiig and company have built it, will they come?

Hilarious bridal party

Rather, "Bridesmaids" is a film of great hilarity, humanity, idiosyncrasy and grade-A, eyebrow-singeing raunch.

Kristen Wiig stars in hilarious, heartbreaking 'Bridesmaids'

"Bridesmaids" could easily be a big hit if people like Wiig and pass the word. I guess this is the big test, because they've got the right movie. This is the sort of thing that will be beloved by many, by almost everyone who sees it.

As much as we get to see the women in Bridesmaids, the groom just doesn’t find a place. For once, the story is not about the bride or the wedding, but the women that get left behind when it happens – and for once, it’s not cheesy or over-the-top. It just is what it is, and what it is, is funny.

PUNCHLINES AND PATHOS FROM THE LADY SET Bridesmaids

The cast's collective efforts easily transcend conventional chick-flick camaraderie, which is terrific news for the film's marketing team and the male viewers they hope to entice. Expect critical adulation and brilliant box office prospects.

Rose Bryne, Jon Hamm co-star in the comedy about a witty thirtysomething woman who is her own worst enemy.

But while there is plenty of sex-oriented humor to follow (some of which feels awkwardly forced), what you actually get is a human comedy with empathetic appeal and a disarmingly candid take on feminine foibles.

Bridesmaids Is A Raunchy, Romantic And Refreshing Must-See

Bridesmaids is raunchy, well-crafted fun and a must-see when it hits theaters in May. The world needs more three-dimensional and unbridled romantic comedy leads like Kristin Wiig. Please?

The writers have sprinkled in amusing characters here and there and that helps the film's two-plus hours speed by. That very athletic, tantric sex we spoke of earlier was thanks to Jon Hamm playing a handsome jerk in that Jon Hamm way that makes you forget you want someone to slap him.

DON'T MISS THIS MOVIE!

Bridesmaids is the funniest movie I’ve ever seen. There are more laughs-per-minute in the film than any in eons.

Maid of dishonour

Bridesmaids reunites Saturday Night Live comedienne Kristen Wiig (most recently seen in Paul) with foul-mouthed comedy’s producer extraordinaire Judd Apatow, who has tickled our funny bone and tested our gag reflex in everything from The 40 Year Old Virgin to Get Him to the Greek.

Bridesmaids

An American comedy released in May 2011, Bridesmaids is written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo and directed by Paul Feig. A female-driven story, the film is the women’s version of The Hangover, only a lot funnier. Repetitive and tiring at times, the movie is still worth seeing for its intelligent script, its hilarious performances and its brutal honesty.

Working in a jewellery store after the cake shop she owned with her boyfriend closed down, Annie (played by the writer herself, Kristen Wiig) is in a pretty bad place to begin with. After a tough break up and going out of business, she starts having “adult sleepovers” with a man who practically hates her. And on top of this

Though the laughs are hit-and-miss, Bridesmaids lucks out in director Paul Feig (The Office, Nurse Jackie), who has the gift of letting scenes play out just long enough to be both hilarious and heartfelt.

“Bridesmaids,” an unexpectedly funny new comedy about women in love, if not of the Sapphic variety, goes where no typical chick flick does: the gutter.

Bridesmaids has a lot of great jokes going for it. While some of the failed bits detract from the overall picture, a little work in the editing bay between now and May could birth a movie that easily stands toe to toe not just with other great female-centric comedies of the past but with great comedies period. Bridesmaids is going to be seen as a female-oriented movie but guys shouldn’t shy away. Much of the same raunchy humor frat boys love seeing their favorite male comedians perform is still present — the performers delivering the jokes are just a lot easier on the eyes.

Bridesmaids Gets Screwed

At its best, Bridesmaids reconciles its two minds, merging high-concept, skit-length and paced comedy with naturalistic conversation (an extended scene on an airplane finds the heretofore unknown common ground between Robert Altman and Jerry Lewis).

Girl Grossout In Taffeta

A pre-matrimonial meltdown movie involving the tying and untying of various knots - of both the conjugal and platonic same sex variety - Bridesmaids is the usual guy humor grossout, parading around in ceremonial taffeta.

Under the direction of Paul Feig (best known as a writer or director on TV shows including Nurse Jackie and Freaks And Geeks), however, the film often tries to milk too many laughs from a given bit of comedy business, extending scenes beyond their useful life. The result is a loose structure and an unwarranted two-hour-plus running time.

Kristen Wiig - so good in Adventureland, MacGruber and the recently released Paul - finally takes centre stage in Bridesmaids, a lewd, crude comedy that plays like a (somewhat inferior) female version of The Hangover.

For the most part, however, "Bridesmaids" is a sluggish, charmless misfire in which even the most appealing players -- including Chris O'Dowd as an Irish-accented cop who inexplicably falls for Annie -- must try too hard to make anything close to an engaging impression.

This is the place to announce, at full voice, that Kristen Wiig is a marvel of schtick, and that this film will situate her, forever, as a major voice in comedy.
