Details

The Zenbook is Asus' first foray into the Ultrabook world, offering powerful guts wrapped up in a super-slim and sturdy aluminium shell. The Zenbook uses a precision-crafted design measuring only 3mm at the front and 9mm at the rear. The form features razor thin edges and a curved center section, which is both practical and attractive – while accommodating the powerful computing components within, this design also looks totally unique. It embodies beauty and strength in complete balance and harmony.

Asus ZenBook UX21 and UX31 hands-on first look review

Lush to look at, the ZenBook just oozes class - which is why the price, while still placing these models into the premium bracket, came as a bit of a surprise. Expensive they may be, but to those seeking the ultimate in PC style we reckon the new Asus ZenBooks are worth every penny.

The UX21 costs $1199.99. Its big brother, the 13″ Zenbook UX31, features an i7 processor, but performancewise there's nothing in it. All in all, the Zenbook UX21 is the best ultrabook alternative to the Macbook Air yet.

Ultrabook with top performance

The ASUS ZenBook UX21 delivers a convincing performance as an extremely high performance product of the line. Only the contrast ratio of the otherwise extremely bright monitor does not really fits into the picture.

The UX21 is a seriously impressive device. Its design is stunning and it packs in all the essentials for a great ultraportable notebook, or ultrabook. We would've liked to see Asus squeeze a memory card reader in there, and ThunderBolt would've been particularly nice, but these are hardly to be expected. All that remains to be seen is how its battery life holds up and how much it retails for when it arrives later this year.

The New Thin

The "Zen" namesake feels almost fitting, and not just marketing. In some corny sense you might say that Asus has demonstrated the attainment of "enlightenment" through their years of notebook design experience and the Zenbook UX21 delivers with the wisdom of those years.

The Asus Zenbook UX21 is not only slim, light and attractive but also offers fantastic performance for a very reasonable price. It's very difficult to find much wrong with it.

It's worth pointing out this is ASUS' first Zenbook. With a long history of making notebooks that aren't like the Zenbook, I am impressed that ASUS came this close to perfection. The issues I've outlined here are easily fixable. The rest of the notebook is really quite excellent. Perhaps Zen was too great a target for the first generation.

First Look

The Asus ZenBook has a lot of promise and it'll be interesting to see if it lives up to its stated thirty five hour battery life. The Zenbook either matches or undercuts Apple's pricing for the MacBook Air range. We would be lying if we said we weren't tempted.

If you sum up the foregoing, we conclude that the ASUS Ultrabook UX21 and UX31 slightly lose to its competitors. We emphasize that it is "slightly" - this is not a complete failure, especially if the buyer is a fan of Microsoft Windows.
